About the author
J.S. Ashworth
A father, writing from lived experience, for every parent and family member who needs it.
For most of my life, I believed that if a problem existed, there had to be a solution.
Business had taught me that. Find the problem, understand it, gather the right people and resources, and figure out a way forward. Determination and hard work could overcome almost anything.
Or so I believed.
Then addiction entered our family.
Suddenly, everything that had worked before seemed to work against me.
There were professionals to consult, programs to consider, places to go, and endless decisions to make. Each offered some hope that this time things might be different.
Sometimes they were. Sometimes they weren’t.
The years passed. The money went. The sleepless nights continued. And somewhere along the way, the effort to save someone I loved began consuming the very life I was trying to protect.
What took years to understand was something remarkably simple, yet incredibly difficult to accept.
Loving someone doesn’t mean controlling their life.
There is a difference between helping and rescuing. Between supporting recovery and trying to make it happen. Between being there for someone and losing yourself in the process.
My son has his own life to live. His own choices to make. His own path to walk.
And so do I.
Why I Wrote Stay with the Moment
This book didn’t begin with the intention of becoming an author.
It began with a need to understand what was happening. The fear, the guilt, the sleepless nights, and the endless questioning of what to do next.
What was helping? What was making things worse? And why did everything that felt like the right thing to do so often turn out to be wrong?
Over time, the writing became a way to examine those questions and recognize patterns that had been difficult to see while living through them.
The lessons weren’t learned overnight. Some came through painful experiences. Others came through conversations, quiet moments, and the realization that perhaps the person who needed to change wasn’t the one everyone had been trying to fix.
Those experiences became Stay with the Moment.
Not a book about how to fix addiction, but a father’s memoir and the lessons learned while loving an adult child through addiction and recovery.
The Journey Continues
Finishing the book doesn’t mean the story is over.
Life continues. There are good days, difficult days, unexpected conversations, and moments that make me stop and think.
I’ll continue sharing those moments here, along with the music that has become another way for me to express what I’m feeling and experiencing.
I don’t know what tomorrow will bring.
But I’m learning that I don’t have to.
I can stay with the moment and let tomorrow arrive.
Why a pen name
J.S. Ashworth is a pen name. It protects the privacy of the people in this story, especially an adult child whose life and recovery are their own to tell. You won't find photographs, names, places, or identifying details here, and that is by design.
This story is mine. His is his to tell.
What this is, and isn't
This is one father's perspective, offered honestly. It is not medical, psychological, or addiction-treatment advice, and it is not a substitute for professional care. If you're looking for support, the resources page is a place to start.
